Students and the War: Then and Now
Nationwide, student press continued to focus on the debate about the war (and about students’ level of participation in that debate) this week. Students at Arizona State University reacted to Eyes Wide Open, an exhibit that consists of one set of empty boots for each soldier from Arizona who has died in the Iraq war. An article from Cornell University considers the school’s ties to Iraq, as well as what one professor calls a “deafening silence” from the undergraduate population. George Washington University’s paper The Hatchet offers the views of student veterans who’ve returned from tours in Iraq. Although a group of students from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill was recently arrested in a protest against the war, an article from UNC’s paper emphasizes differences in the level of visible student engagement between the current Iraq War and the Vietnam era. Eight University of Iowa students comprised the better part of a group of 11 people arrested for trespassing during a protest at U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley-(R)’s office.
