Students Challenge Red Cross

Over the past few years the American Red Cross has received flack on many college campuses and in some churches and communities for its policy of restricting gay men from donating blood. The Binghamton University Student Assembly is considering a resolution asking university officials to publicly acknowledge that the Red Cross’s guidelines violate the university’s non-discrimination policies. The policy actually originates with the Food and Drug Administration, which defends the policy as important to avoid potential contamination risks of HIV/AIDS.  Even though the American Red Cross, which originally supported the policy, now advocates for its removal, some activists continue to target them because they are responsible for the vast majority of blood donations in the United States.
