Students Confront Race
Students at the University of Oregon came bound and gagged to a Student Senate meeting to symbolize the institutional racism they feel is pervasive on campus. The Senate meeting sparked the protest (at least in part) because it was to serve as a hearing for a senator accused of ethics violations for accusing other senators of racism; many believe the hearing represented the “boiling point” of persistent and unaddressed campus feeling. Student senators’ reactions to the student protests varied. Oregon wasn’t alone in race-related protests, however. At least 50 members of the Princeton University community gathered to protest incidents of racism and violence at the school and in the community. At Swarthmore College, student dissatisfaction with Student Council presidential candidates’ answers to questions on a host of “isms” drew an additional night of discussion between candidates and students. Members of Swarthmore’s Intercultural Center and Black Cultural Center drafted a statement to the candidates and community that continued to express dissatisfaction with candidate support for, or experience with, campus cultural and support groups. An article from Washington State University’s Daily Evergreen reports on a racial campus climate that many find problematic.
