Students Continue Tradition of “The Vagina Monologues” Despite Ban From Administration

Date: 2/19/2009 7:32 pm

Performances of "The Vagina Monologues" are prevalent on campuses all across the country during February for Women’s History Month. However, not all campuses and administrations are receptive to the show: Providence College students are preparing for another off-campus performance of the show, a tradition since the school banned the production in 2006. Providence College, a Catholic school, is one of 16 Catholic colleges and universities that has banned the performance of ‘The Vagina Monologues’ since 2003. Much of the resistance to the production at Catholic universities comes from The Cardinal Newman Society, a national Catholic organization that has led public protest of the show for eight years. Each year, event organizers choose "spotlight" organizations and dedicate a monologue in the play and some profits to those organizations. This year proceeds from the Providence College show will be split between the Panzi Hospital, a hospital in the Congo that helps victims of genital mutilation, and a women’s shelter in Providence.
