Students Help Africa, Latin America

Date: 11/17/2008 05:28 pm

Students across the country participated in service projects and fundraising for charitable organizations connected to the developing world, particularly Africa and Latin America. Students at North Carolina State University worked with the Morlove Project to refashion clothing, with proceeds going to a Ugandan orphanage. Students at Kansas State University prepared for their 10-week service trip to Botswana. Students at Southern Methodist University worked with Amnesty International to hold an auction, with proceeds benefiting the African Union Mission in Sudan. Students at Princeton University worked with a Swarthmore College group to raise money for a school in rural Ecuador. The event, a musical performance, raised about $400 for the Village Education Project, a nonprofit organization that tries to cover the costs of education for rural children in developing countries. Students at Penn State University held a 5K race to raise money for Amnesty International, GlobeMed, Invisible Children, and Rescue Childhood, who hope to build a day shelter for street children in Santo Domingo.
