Last fall The Waltham Housing Authority in Waltham Massachusetts approved the opening of the Prospect Hill Terrace Community Center after local tenants, with the help of Brandeis University students, advocated for it. The students were part of the Community Engaged Learning projects, started last year to integrate the university’s dedication to academic excellence and social justice with its obligation to the community. They spent a few days working in a local housing development and getting to know the tenants. Following their experiences in the low-income community, students organized a petition for the center. While the community center is being built, students have created a temporary space for the center, transforming a three-room apartment into the center’s temporary location.
