Students Honor Cesar Chavez

Date: 11/17/2008 05:28 pm

On the last Saturday in March, the day before his birthday, students across the country honored civil rights leader Cesar Chavez. Students, many involved with the student organization MeChA, spent the day performing service projects and marching in honor of the leader, whose teachings continue to inspire young people across the country to pursue an education and take on positive roles within their communities. Some students took the day to advocate for making March 31st a national holiday in honor of Chavez, a proposal supported by nearly forty cities across the country. The University of California system has proposed renaming a pre-existing administrative holiday on the last Monday in March after Chavez.
