Students in Connecticut Bike for Climate Change

On September 25, two students at Connecticut College took part in a “climate conference on wheels.” The five-day Brita Climate Ride had participants bike from New York City to Capitol Hill while learning about issues of sustainability and climate change. Sophomore Erik Karwatowski and Junior Annie Bigwood each raised $2,400 to participate in the event, which hosted nightly lectures from renowned environmentalists and ended with a personal meeting with a Congressional Representative.
Climate Riders began in New York City and ended in Washington D.C., stopping at places such as Princeton University and Phoenixville, Pa. to hear speakers including Colin Beavan, a man who lived an entire year with zero carbon impact.
According to the Climate Ride website, the “total cost of climate change will be as high as 3.6 percent of gross domestic product,” and in order to slow down climate change Climate Riders advocate “more biking and less oil-induced gluttony”.
Bigwood viewed the 300-mile ride as an opportunity “to prove a point (by practicing) what you preach by biking instead of driving”. She said that attending the PowerShift energy conference in Washington D.C. last year inspired her to do Climate Ride.
Junior Emily Conrad, president of the Renewable Energy Club, documented the event by riding alongside the bikers in a car. She filmed footage for news stations, promotional clips for the Climate Ride organization, and a forty-minute documentary about the social and political impacts of the event.
