Students Lobby for DREAM at UCLA

Students at University of California at Los Angeles lobbied Oct. 22 and 23 for the DREAM Act—legislation designed to provide financial aid for undocumented college students. DREAM stands for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors, and is touted by supporters as a necessary step in solving the immigration problem in America.

Sofia Campos, an undocumented high school senior applying to UCLA, thinks making college an opportunity for the children of immigrants will help in creating a more educated work force, and streamlining the citizenship process will allow people to put their degrees to work after graduation.

Students from a range of UCLA organizations, including the Undergraduate Students Association Council, met with Congressman Brad Sherman to plea their case for the DREAM Act. The students hoped to gain Sherman’s vocal support and co-sponsorship for the act.

Sherman’s office informed the students of the congressman’s stance prior to the meeting on the proposal: he is in favor of comprehensive immigration reform and sees the DREAM Act as a “chip” in the larger table of discussion, and was therefore unsure of how he would vote if the act came to the floor.

Caitlin Lawrence-Toombs, a political science student and assistant external vice president for local affairs, said the group was still determined to push DREAM through even without a show of support from Sherman.

“His staff seemed to be surprised by how many people have already signed on and who they are,” Lawrence-Toombs said. “There seemed to be an element of peer pressure there, and I think that’s a good thing,”
