Students Protest Affirmative Action Bake Sale
Date: 11/17/2008 05:28 pm
College Republicans held a bake sale in which they charged students different prices (based on race) in order to highlight their issues with affirmative action. White students were charged more for their baked goods, while blacks were charged very little. Several student groups in favor of affirmative action held a silent protest around the bake sale, outnumbering the College Republicans. The event has sparked debate within the University, with those in favor arguing that affirmative action helps underrepresented students receive higher education, and those opposed feeling today’s social climate is different and affirmative action is outdated.
