Students Protest at Right-Wing Appearances
Campus visits by prominent conservative leaders proved to be divisive in recent campus news. Vice President Dick Cheney will be the commencement speaker at Brigham Young University on April 26, but already students are protesting his appearance. About 100 students stood in a designated area and followed instructions to keep silent while they protested the war in Iraq and Cheney’s support of it. Nearby, College Republicans were attracting students to sign a thank you letter for the Vice President, collecting about 400 signatures in less than an hour. At American University, more than 80 people protested a speech by Karl Rove—including 16 students and community members who broke through police lines to lie in front of Mr. Rove’s car in an attempted citizens’ arrest. The incident occurred at the conclusion of a College Republicans-sponsored event (which the College Republicans did not advertise to the wider campus community, though no one was barred from attending). A speech by conservative columnist Ann Coulter drew a protest of about 20 individuals, as well as ruckus support, at the University of Pittsburgh.
