Students Protest University Contract

Date: 11/17/2008 05:28 pm

Students at the University of California Berkley gathered to protest the University's recent $500 million contract with BP Amoco PLC. Students have voiced a variety of concerns over the partnership, ranging from the lack of student involvement in the decision, to the potential harms of biofuels research, to concerns over whether contracts with private businesses risk the University’s academic integrity. Two students were arrested on charges of trespassing after spilling a black substance, meant to represent “oil contamination,” during the protest (the substance is believed to be molasses). The Chancellor responded to some of the concerns at a Graduate Assembly meeting.
