Students Protest Unlawful Imprisonment
Date: 11/17/2008 05:28 pm
Over 100 students and faculty at North Carolina State University protested against the indefinite imprisonment of a Palestinian NCSU alumnus. The computer science professor Sami Al-Arian was accused of aiding a terrorist group in 2005, but at trial he was acquitted of the eight most serious charges against him. He pleaded guilty to the rest, securing an agreement that he would serve an 18-month prison sentence and be deported afterwards. When he refused to testify against Islamic charities in Virginia because it was not part of his plea agreement, the U.S. government began holding him indefinitely. He has been on hunger strike for over 60 days.
