Students Rally Against Sweatshop Labor in College Apparel

More than 50 students from the Stanford Sweat-Free Campaign held a rally last Friday to pressure administrators to agree to purchase college apparel from sweatshop-free suppliers. The campaign has been working closely with Stanford administration for the past two years in hopes that the university will adopt the stricter guidelines of the Designated Suppliers Program (DSP). The protestors believe joining the DSP would ensure that all Stanford apparel was made in approved factories that employ safe and fair labor practices because DSP factories are independently evaluated. According to Weinstein, the school already employs a task force to protect workers' rights and is a member of both the Fair Labor Association and the Workers' Rights Consortium, the latter of which oversees the DSP. Though students commend the steps Stanford has taken to promote fair labor, the Sweat-Free Campaign believes that human rights abuses may still occur if Stanford’s standards continue to rely on the self-reporting of factories. “We [believe] that the task force created by [Weinstein], which relies heavily on self-reported levels of compliance by licensees and companies, is a fundamentally flawed and inadequate approach to the problem of sweatshops,” Theresa Zhen said. “Companies need to be held accountable through independent means, and the DSP is the only solution on the table which offers this independent mechanism through factory certification, long-term contracts, a fair price requirement.”
