Students rally to celebrate University Police’s new policy towards illegal immigrants

Date: 5/11/2009 1:21 pm

Northwestern University student leaders held a rally of about 70 students and Evanston residents on Thursday celebrating the campus police's change in its policy toward illegal immigrants. Members of Alianza, a Hispanic/Latino student organization, prompted university police to enact the change after the Evanston City Council passed a similar resolution last year. The new policy states that University Police will not refer anyone to immigration enforcement unless there is a felony charge or warrant for an arrest. Students had initially organized the rally to protest the university police arresting undocumented immigrant Ramiro Sanchez-Zepeda for drunk driving on April 26 and then referring him to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for detainment and deportation. While the organizers are now celebrating the policy change instead, they plan to continue raising awareness of workers' rights issues, access to housing and family reunification in addition to addressing racial profiling and discrimination on campus.
