Students Rights to Register

Date: 11/17/2008 4:28 pm

Much confusion has arisen in recent months over student registration and voting rights. Federal law allows students to claim both their permanent and campus addresses as residences, giving them the option to register either at either address. But local voting laws often complicate the process. And in some places, confusing and misleading information is being given to students about their rights. Students in New Mexico have been told their ballots may be thrown out, and students in Montana are being questioned on their eligibility, all because of address complications. The sheer number of students registering for the first time has left registrars swamped and fearful that the applications may not all be processed in time. The youth vote has stirred up so much controversy that Congress heard testimony on voting issues pertaining particularly to college students. Two weeks ago the House of Representatives heard testimony on everything from absentee ballot issues, to concerns about the purposeful exclusion of the student vote by locals who do not share youth interests.
