Students Tackle Hunger

Date: 11/17/2008 4:28 pm

Iowa State’s Student Union Board Awareness Committee held a Hunger Banquet this week to demonstrate the difference between the first world, the second world, and the third world.  Upon entering the Banquet, students drew a card that assigned them to one of the three worlds.  First-world students were served a full-course dinner, second-world students served themselves rice and beans, and third-world students sat on the floor and ate rice. Students at the University of Arizona coordinated a 30-hour fast to accompany the Hunger Banquet at that University. Students at UCLA competed in a campus North side vs. South side fundraising war to benefit the Hunger Project, an organization that combats hunger in third-world countries with an emphasis on empowering women.
