UCLA's Student Activist Project brought students to sweatshops in downtown Los Angeles to see the conditions that exist in these students' backyards. Students explored the fashion district of the city, starting with a Garment Worker Center that helps textile employees obtain resources, such as childcare, counseling and workshops on health care. The students were later left to explore the district, learning through the course of the day that even though most of their clothing was manufactured abroad, sweatshops still exist in the United States. One of the Student Activist Project's facilitators hopes the day will encourage students to support striking workers. Read more from UCLA |
