Suffolk University Awarded Veteran’s Grant

Date: 09/30/2009 02:47 pm

Last week Suffolk University was awarded a $1 Million Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) grant for the next four years. The VUB program, created in 1972 for Vietnam veterans, is funded by the U.S. Department of Education through its TRIO grant programs, which are intended to increase the rate of post-secondary education.

The VUB grant will be used to pay tuition costs for 120 low-income veterans from the Boston area who are the first in their families to go to college. The Suffolk program will begin when the University takes applications in November. The program will provide assessment counseling, an individualized education, and courses in most major departments.

The administration at Suffolk was very excited about the award. University President David Sargent put the grant in the context of national service, saying that this grant will help the University fill a “critical need for [veteran] educational services as they seek to improve their lives.”

Director of Suffolk University’s Office of Academic Access and Opportunity added that “this program demonstrates Suffolk’s continued commitment to serving the Greater Boston community, while providing access and opportunity for those who have traditionally been underrepresented and marginalized in higher education.”

Seven other colleges received the award this year, including Henderson State University in Arkansas; Yavapai County Community College in Arizona, and Bemidji State University in Minnesota.
