Former U.S. attorney general Alberto Gonzales will begin teaching at Texas Tech University in the fall despite strong objections from students and alumni. Students, including the Texas Tech Daily Toreador editorial staff, objected both to some of his more controversial actions while Attorney General and to his high salary--$100,000—amidst large budget cuts. Gonzales was hired by Tech to teach political science and help the university recruit more first generation Latinos. The student newspaper, The Daily Toreader, ran an editorial arguing Gonzales’ ability to be a role model for the Latino community was undermined by his actions as attorney general and leaving Washington “in disgrace” and alumni have organized several facebook groups to object to Gonzales’ contract.
