The Coverage: Barack Obama’s Presidential Inauguration

Date: 1/22/2009 12:39 am

While there was only one inauguration ceremony, the media took several different angles on the day's events. Mainstream coverage of the event from several national media networks like CNN took immediate notice of the rhetoric President Obama used, his speech's content, and the quality of his speech in comparison to others he had delivered in the past. From there, they immediately began to question the future, asking if the new president will be able to live up to his bold statement. The coverage on many college campuses focused more on student gatherings and celebrations rather than the inauguration itself. Stories about the University of Missouri and University of Delaware focused on the organization of events and reactions from those watching the inauguration. The Columbia Spectator, student newspaper for President Obama's alma mater Columbia University, focused on the tension between students getting to their classes and their desires to watch events unfold on the big screen set up in front of the library. Students at Penn State refused to let the major networks be the only ones offering live coverage: the school's Penn LIVE station sent seven broadcast students and two professors to record and post live video updates from D.C. during the inauguration.
