The Eco Chamber

Five University of California Berkeley students are sitting in a redwood tree in protest of several University policies, including the $500 million research deal the University has with BP Amoco PLC and the possible removal of some oak trees on campus. Students at St. John’s University used the National Student Advertising Competition, this year sponsored by Coca-Cola, to advertise the plight of the polar bear and the possibility of saving its natural habitats through the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. Students at the University of Oregon organized and ran a four-day conference focused on sustainability, which drew more than 300 people.  The event included a “Trashy Fashion Show,” workshops, and speakers. Students across the country celebrated Earth Day in a variety of ways, attending speeches, presentations, panel discussions, film screenings, and festivals, all in the spirit of celebrating the earth and promoting sustainability. Read about Earth Day festivities from Dartmouth University, Duke University, Cornell University, the University of Connecticut, the University of Georgia, the University of Georgia, and the University of Iowa.
