Biking programs are the newest green trend on college campuses. Environmentally conscious students and administrators have set up bike rental programs on campus offering students a more environmentally and financially sound transportation alternative. According to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, there are 61 free or low-cost bike rental programs on college campuses. Emory University, for example, offers students and employees bicycles for sale at a discounted price or for rent at no cost as part of their "Bike Emory" initiative announced last year. Ripon College spent $26,000 to offer its incoming freshmen free mountain bikes if they opt to leave their automobiles behind, and about half of the incoming class has taken advantage of the offer. Northern Illinois University, Illinois State University and Washington University are among the institutions that have established free bike rental programs. At Duke University and UC Berkeley a small fee will provide students with bikes and equipment to navigate campus.
