The King and his Surfs

Date: 11/17/2008 05:28 pm

Student members of the Georgetown Solidarity Committee (GSC) recently protested at a Burger King in downtown DC, greeting BK customers with cheers and fliers as they stopped in for their lunch breaks. The group has been working with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, a group of tomato-pickers from southern Florida, to organize better wages and improved working conditions for BK employees. Currently the farm workers are paid less than minimum wage. In April 2007, McDonald’s agreed to increase the price it pays pickers and in May Yum Brands, which owns Taco Bell, Long John Silver’s, KFC and Pizza Hut, followed suit. The GSC is hoping to convince Burger King to do the same.
