The Lie that Told the Truth

If your campus rallied behind a student who claimed to be the victim of a hate crime, only to find out that the student was lying, what do you think would happen? We’d bet money that at least some of our campuses would (a) voice disgust with the “victim,” then (b) self-assure that the incident proved the campus to be a safe enough, tolerant enough space, then (c) resume life as it was before the rallies and slogans and hugs. With that in mind, we point you to Boise State, where just such a fictional attack, rally, and recant went down after weeks of rancorous debate between gay, minority, and conservative students. But instead of doing (a)–(c), students at Idaho’s largest University continue to question their campus’s atmosphere and safety.
