The Mexican Connection

A
group of students from UC Santa Barbara have been working to raise awareness of
the political situation in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. The state of Oaxaca has been relatively unstable since
May of 2006, when a teacher’s strike evolved into wider civil unrest—especially
surrounding accusations of a stolen election, brutalization, disappearances,
and murder. Students protested and lobbied members of the UCSB community to
become more involved in the Oaxacan struggle. The UCSB Associated Students
Legislative Council also passed a resolution supporting human rights in Oaxaca.
