The Michigan Test

Students
everywhere should keep at least one eye on Michigan schools in the coming months, due
to the passage of the extremely controversial Prop 2. For those of you
unfamiliar with the proposition, here’s a little background. Way back in 2003,
a US Supreme Court case upheld a general affirmative action policy for Michigan's law school,
but struck down the school's undergraduate admissions formula. The case
prompted Proposition 2, a ballot initiative that passed on November 7th;
because of that initiative Michigan’s
state schools can no longer use race and gender in admissions and hiring. A
judge just ruled that the new rules take effect in July, meaning this
semester’s acceptances will be the last of their kind in the state.
