The New Black is Green

Date: 11/17/2008 05:28 pm

A coalition of more than 20 student groups at Johns Hopkins University demonstrated last week, calling for the University President to adopt a carbon-neutral policy for University structures. The carbon-neutral policy would require the University to end its use of coal and oil by 2015, instead adopting more environmentally friendly sources of heat and power. The University of Iowa has no recycling program, but the Environmental Coalition hosted its second recycling drive this semester, encouraging students to bring their recyclables to a campus lobby to be recycled by the group. Seniors at the University of Delaware have decided that the Class of 2007’s gift will be a recycling program; students have established a fund to allow the school to revamp its recycling needs into the future. Students at the University of Pennsylvania got a head start on Earth Day this year, hosting a fair to spread awareness of environmental issues including recycling, local food, and energy conservation. At Boston University, the Environmental Student Organization asked the Student Union to add an optional $10 sustainability fee to tuition in order to purchase renewable energy credits from clean energy industries. Local community members have joined Miami University students in their Go Green Initiative, together urging Miami University to become a climate neutral campus.
