A few months ago the Department of Veteran Affairs signed a new GI Bill into law. As the name suggests, the “Post-9/11 GI Bill” is designed for veterans who served on active duty during the three years after 9/11. The bill, which is scheduled for completion in August 2009, would cover veterans’ full tuition and college fees, as well as a monthly housing allowance and book stipend. Some lawmakers are worried that the new Bill, is an “unusually complex” piece of legislation, and will not be ready for execution by August 2009. Compared with the current GI Bill, the post 9/11 Bill does not cover apprenticeship or on-the-job training programs, and applies only to students attending “higher learning institutions.” The Montgomery GI Bill, already in existence, offers coverage for apprenticeship and on-the-job training programs, an option for those veterans who are pressed for money and in need of a job.
