The Associated Students of the University of New Mexico (ASUNM) debated the role of student government when a senator proposed a resolution dealing with international issues. Specifically, the resolution had to do with the extradition of a man who is wanted by Cuba and Venezuela for the bombing of a Cuban passenger jet in 1976. The senator who introduced the resolution said, “It is our duty as citizens to take a stance on terrorism. This is not a political issue. It involves a moral and ethical stance that student governments must take.” The majority of senators present, however, did not see what the resolution had to do with a student government, and voted not to take up the resolution.
