The vast majority of student news is focused on the Virginia Tech tragedy, called the deadliest shooting in this country’s history. The tragedy shocked the nation and shook higher education community into grief and worry. The Cavalier Daily, the University of Virginia’s paper, released a heartfelt editorial to students. Several editorial staffs from outside Virginia sent their condolences as well; we’ve included an example from Boston University. Several universities took measures to ensure that similar situations would not develop on their own campuses, while others simply explained their current plan of action to students. The Ohio State University community banded together to create a banner containing hundreds of messages of support for students at Virginia Tech. Vigils were held at a number of schools, including Syracuse University. The Asian-American community generally, and the Korean-American community in particular, have expressed sorrow, and worries over backlash, at the news that gunman Cho Seung-Hui was of Korean birth. A Daily Princetonian article examines the fears of some Korean and Korean-American students. The Collegiate Times, Virginia Tech’s student newspaper, reports that a current student and a recent grad have created a website to help those affected by Monday’s shootings. As the site is not currently registered as a charitable organization, the creators are working with the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund, which will provide money for grief counseling, memorials, and communication expenses, among other things.
