Because their primaries come so late, Oregon and Kentucky voters didn’t expect their votes to have much significance, a dynamic that changed due to the protracted Democratic primary. Oregon colleges are still in session and students have been active on campus, including efforts by the Oregon Student Association, who registered close to 6,000 students before the primaries. The University of Oregon’s student newspaper, the Oregon Daily Emerald, endorsed Obama in an editorial published early last week. Senator Obama, in an effort to reach directly out to students, even wrote a guest column for Oregon State University’s student newspaper the Daily Barometer. Exit polls showed Senator Obama won an overwhelming majority of young voters in Oregon, while Senator Clinton won the youth vote in Kentucky.
