Students involved in the Mountain Justice Spring Break (MJSB) program at Florida State University will soon be spending their vacation days working against the coal industry in the Appalachian Mountains. The students will be protesting Mountaintop Removal Mining, a form of coal mining in which miners blast off the top of a mountain to access the coal underneath, and then dump the excess debris into nearby riverbeds – a process that is extremely detrimental to the environment and surrounding communities. The students will spend their time cleaning riverbeds, fighting proposals for new coalmines, and participating in workshops to promote community activism and build leadership skills.
