Hundreds of protesters, many of them NYU students, gathered last Monday in Union Square for the 49th annual Tibetan National Uprising Day, a demonstration held each year to oppose China’s occupation of Tibet. In downtown Salt Lake City crowds gathered in front of the Federal Building that morning to hold a moment of silence in honor of Tibetans killed during China's occupation of Tibet. Protestors are using the international attention for the upcoming summer Olympics, to be held in China, to highlight China’s continued violence and human rights violations in Tibet.
