Researchers at UC Berkeley are using Wurster Hall on the campus to
experiment with a new water-recycling program that hopefully will be implemented in multiple buildings. The system will separate wastewater by color and treat them separately. Grey water from laundry will be separated from yellow urine water and dark water from feces. Treating them separately is expected to reduce pollution, recapture nutrients and reduce the use of water by up to 50%, as according to Vicki Elmer, a campus lecturer of city and regional planning. Although research for the project is still in the beginning stages, researchers hope to be able to keep track of the use of their newly treated water soon.
