UC Center at Sacramento Suspended
After major budget cuts in California, the University of California Center at Sacramento is under suspension, a move that should save the university approximately $800,000. The Center has served 600 students since its opening in 2003, giving them high quality training in the field of their choice with a focus on civic engagement.
“[UCCS] nurtures the ongoing dialogue between the UC and Capitol Communities... promoting excellence in public policy through academics research and public service,” states the Web site.
UC plans to find an alternative campus for the Sacramento program and is considering UC Davis, which is located 12 miles away. The interns who are currently in the program will finish their quarter at the center while UC officials figure out a new model and location by December.
If relocated, accepted interns would still be taught about the legislative process, continuing the “vehicle of bringing in experts to share some expertise,” said UC spokesman Peter King.
Cuts to the UC budget as well as student fee increases and faculty furloughs are “not easy, and the consequences are painful,” King said. “But when you’re looking at a billion dollar hole in your budget, there are some sacrifices.”
