Six University of California commencement speakers have cancelled their appearances in support of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, a union representing over 20,000 UC employees, in their ongoing labor dispute with the UC System. AFSCME, which has been negotiating for higher wages with the university system for nearly a year, voted to strike in late May. The strike was averted, however, when both sides decided to return to the negotiation table. Responding to requests from AFSCME, prominent political commencement speakers such as Bill Clinton, General Wesley Clark, and Congressman Henry Waxman decided to cancel their commencement speeches.
