UCLA Professor Accuses Administration of Illegal Affirmative Action
Tim Groseclose, a professor of political science at the University of California-Los Angeles recently resigned from the admissions committee because he suspected officials of illegally admitting more black students than normal, claiming that officers were influenced by students’ essays which mentioned race. He has also alleged that the school has blocked access to data that would confirm his allegations. California’s public universities are banned from using race as an admissions criterion, and have received criticism in recent years for the low number of black student admitted to the university. However, the school denies the allegations and attributes the rise in admission to the school’s new holistic admissions policy, which takes life experience into account in addition to academics. UCLA is commissioning a study to determine whether black students or other minority students receive an unfair advantage in the admissions process.
