The University of Georgia is monitoring and recording students’ internet activities in an attempt to cut down on piracy.
Not even the Recording Industry Association of America keeps track of copyright infringing students anymore; but the University’s Enterprise Information Technology systems still monitor peer-to-peer software use.
Every time peer-to-peer software is used, a record is stored on the University’s network. Copyright holders monitor such sites for violations.
Official University policy does not mandate punishment of students for copyright violation. Rather, when informed by a copyright holder of an infringement, the University will contact the student responsible and request that they stop the illegal activity.
A University security official also claimed that the networks are not monitored to catch students breaking the law, but to prevent the spread of viruses and malware.
Recently, a University employee was accused of extorting students whose IP addresses he had been keeping track of. The employee was arrested Feb. 1.
The University has no plans to begin censoring web sites to prevent copyright infringement. “We don’t believe in censorship; we believe in self-regulation,” Jackson said. “We don’t censor the Internet. That’s something they do in China.”
