University of Florida Community Protests Proposed Legalization of Discrimination
Members of Equality in Gainesville’s Business (EGB) led a campus march of about 80 University of Florida students and faculty on Feb. 20 to protest a proposed amendment to the city's charter. EGB asserts the amendment would make it legal for companies to fire gay employees and refuse service to gays. EGB also sent a letter to UF President Bernie Machen encouraging him to oppose the legislation, and spoke to Interim Dead of Student Paige Crandall. Loren Jones, a senior at Florida, said Machen's support is crucial to defeating the proposal. “Unfortunately, students’ voices don’t seem to be heard,” she said. “We want an administration who speaks on our behalf. He has credibility. His support will go a long way.” UF's student and faculty senates both passed resolutions against the amendment, which is on the ballot in the upcoming city elections March 24.
