University of Hawaii President David McClain announced plans to cut pay for faculty and administrators, institute furloughs and add early retirement programs in order to address $155 million in state budget cuts. The proposals are aimed at keeping the University within budget while avoiding program cuts. However, faculty members worry that over the long term these proposals could hurt the quality of academic programs for students. Despite these proposals, programs are already seeing cuts as 150 staff have not been rehired and 500 course sections are on hold. At UH Manoa, basic services including library hours and student counseling are also on the chopping block.
