University’s Non-Discrimination Policy Collides with Military E-mails

A 1996 federal statue known as the Solomon Amendment requires universities to share student directory information or face the possibility of losing funding. Many universities, like Brown, face the problem of cooperating with military recruitment efforts—even though the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy (which prohibits openly gay men or women from serving) directly conflicts with the school’s non-discrimination policy (which prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation).
