University of New Mexico students with the Fair Trade Initiative are working to raise awareness of worker exploitation and to advocate for more Fair-Trade products to be served on campus. Members of the student group began with their Dine with Dignity campaign in April to educate fellow students about the harsh working conditions and low wages that farm workers receive. The group met with Chartwells, the university’s food-service provider, on May 14 to push for more Fair-Trade products in the campus cafeterias. Chartwells district manager Rudy Simchak said restaurants on campus already have Fair-Trade coffee options and carry Fair-Trade chocolate, and that he discussed food options with the student group that included an increase in using local produce.
