The United States Student Association held its 40th
annual Grassroots Legislative Conference (LegCon) last week, bringing over 400
students from around the country to Washington D.C. for training, speakers and
a rally and lobby day on Capitol Hill.
Students focused their advocacy on supporting key higher education
elements of President Obama’s budget and the DREAM Act, which would allow
states to grant in-state tuition to undocumented immigrants who meet specific
qualifications and put them on a path to citizenship. The conference was well timed, as it
coincided with congressional consideration of the budget and the introduction
of the DREAM Act. Beyond the day of action at the Capitol, students discussed
ways to go back to campus and continue building support for USSA’s priority
campaigns.
