In response to the elevated military action of the Israeli army against Hamas controlled Gaza, students across the world are expressing their opinions in the streets. A handful of students gathered at the Wichita State campus in Kansas to speak out against Israel’s action and America’s compliance through a lack of condemnation and students at North Carolina State U. in Raleigh gathered in front of the university bell tower to speak out against Israel’s actions. California Polytechnic students have scheduled a protest against Israeli action for this Thursday. Some are turning to the internet to voice their opinions, such as University of Maryland student Amira Omar who is using Facebook to voice her support of the Gaza Palestinians. In sharp contrast to the relatively small demonstrations on U.S. campuses, international campus communities are voicing their opinions with large numbers. The AP reports 70,000 Iranian students have volunteered to go to Israel and fight to support Hamas. Students in New Delhi, India threw their shoes at the roadside to express their anger at the United States and Israel over the attacks. At Haifa University In Tel Aviv, protestors and supporters of operation “Cast Lead” gathered at the same site to demonstrate, with Israeli police keeping the crowds separated. The International Herald Tribune reports students supporting Gaza in the town of Ramallah in the West Bank of Palestine were suppressed and beaten back by Palestinian riot police on their way to the Israeli checkpoint.
