We Got Green

Fraternity parties generate plenty of trash—a normal party can fill 15 industrial trash bags with plastic cups—but student apathy and a lack of motivation have blocked previous attempts at starting a recycling program within Dartmouth University’s fraternities. Carrie Burns, a sustainability intern, is now trying to get a recycling bin at every party. Two students at the University of Connecticut organized the 2007 EcoHusky5000, a 5-kilometer road race designed to "showcase some of UConn's most beautiful landscapes."  While the students have not yet decided whom this year's proceeds will benefit, they are considering two choices: installing recycling redemption machines in on-campus apartment complexes, or retrofitting a bus stop to run on solar power. The University of Washington is hosting the Hazel Wolf Environmental Film Festival in its first Seattle showing; the film festival will focus on climate change and environmental justice through 50 films and shorts, most of which are documentaries. Two Lehigh students are pushing for printing quotas to cut down on wasted paper; the article from the Brown and White also discusses what other schools are doing to lessen their environmental impact. Eco-Reps at Princeton University created a display of a tent full of cans and other recyclable materials intended to raise awareness of recycling on campus. A Daily Kansan article from the University of Kansas spotlights one student's devotion and activism in environmental causes, particularly sustainability.
