What’s Under Your Napkin?

Members
of Columbia’s student groups (including Students Promoting Empowerment and
Knowledge, United Students of Color Council, and Students for Environmental and
Economic Justice) joined members of the labor union UNITE to protest Columbia
University’s contract with a non-union cleaners. New England Linen (they clean
napkins and other things for the Ivy school) is accused of preventing worker
organization, allowing dangerous and unhealthy working conditions, paying
poverty wages, and making health care benefits prohibitively expensive. The
company received a $14,070 fine for health and safety violations from the US
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) this past summer.
