Where's Waskar?
The University of Nebraska Lincoln is experiencing some unusual—though not unique—problems in bring a professor from abroad. Waskar Ari, a Bolivian historian, was hired as an assistant professor of history and ethnic studies two years ago. The Department of Homeland Security has not offered an explanation for not granting Ari's request for an H1-B form, the visa he needs. The University has filed a lawsuit in response to the delay, now at 22 months. Students with Nebraskans For Peace, Amnesty International, and the history honors society Phi Alpha Theta have been working to raise awareness of the situation. A similar situation has been reported at Harvard, where an assistant professor of anthropology has been awaiting permission for reentry from Pakistan.
