The University of Wisconsin System is being forced to hand over $23 million from segregated student fees to the state government to pay for financial aid. Segregated fees were established to provide funding for student activities and services—from health services to student organizations—and generally require student input to be spent. Nearly $2.2 million from UW-Madison will go toward the state, about $180,000 of which comes directly from the student government’s reserves. Student government members around the state will be meeting over the next few weeks to determine how to respond.
The state is taking the funds from the University System’s reserves to pay for financial aid grants including a new program aimed at protecting families who earn less than $60,000 from having to pay tuition increases.
